PALM BEACH GARDENS | At its Nov. 19, 2024, dinner meeting, the Jupiter-Palm Beach chapter of Legatus featured Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, speaking on “Explicitly Pro-Life: Apologetics in a Post-Roe America.”
Deanna Herbst-Hoosac, director of Catholic Charities’ Respect Life ministry, who also spoke at the Legatus event, said Hawkins spoke about the concept of “rise, fight, lose and rise again,” which is part of the mission of pro-life ministry.
“Her key area is reaching out to those on the sidewalks and getting their take on abortion and public policy, nationally. She then challenges them with what the laws are and that a pregnancy is rightfully a human being. Confronting them with facts and having them explain themselves into what they already know to be the truth,” Herbst-Hoosac said.
Addressing the successful Vote No on 4 campaign, Herbst-Hoosac talked about the more than 35 educational events held in the five-county Diocese of Palm Beach and the outreach of Florida’s Catholic bishops, offering clear messaging and resources to all parishes.
“I also mentioned our crisis care centers and the good works that Women’s Pregnancy Solutions and Birthline/Lifeline do in our diocese and to get that information out to the community,” she said. “This was the first time we had a state-challenged constitutional amendment for the pro-life movement, and we learned as we went.”
The next Legatus event is set for Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, with speaker Cardinal Raymond L. Burke, former head of the Vatican’s Apostolic Signatura, the church’s highest court.
