College Counselor - Cardinal Newman High School

Cardinal Newman High School, located in West Palm Beach, FL is searching for a College Counselor beginning in 2025-2026 Academic Year.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience using Scoir is strongly desirable.
  • Ability to work with other college counselors and the school counseling team. 
  • Demonstrates excellence in written and verbal communication.
  • Organized and able to handle high workloads during college application season.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides group and individual counseling to students and parents regarding all areas of college guidance, including, but not limited to, college entrance exams and preparation, college search and selection, college research and goal focused high school planning, and the actual college application process.
  • Counsels students regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, dropping and adding classes and college/career planning.
  • Creates and submits materials to colleges in support of college applicants, including transcripts, references/recommendations, scholarships awards.
  • Maintains connections with colleges and admissions representatives including scheduling college visits, coordinating college fairs and panels and attending college events to network.
  • Collaborates with High School Faculty to develop and maintain community partnerships and create a college culture.
  • Plans and conducts workshops and evening events for parents and students to discuss post-high school educational plans and options.
  • Helps parents and students to understand and utilize the four year plan for career and college planning.
  • Analyzes data and use results to inform stakeholders regarding school improvement; interpret cognitive/aptitude/achievement tests; analyze grade point average in relationship to achievement.
  • Tracks trends in admissions and college counseling fields.
  • Organized, outgoing, service-oriented, exceptional writing, strong public speaking skills, attention to detail, and a solid work ethic.
  • Understand the college admission process at a variety of institution types and selectivity levels.
  • Cultivate relationships with admission professionals, including hosting college admission visitors to our school and visiting college campuses.
  • Provide guidance and resources to support students as they navigate the college search and application process.
  • Guide students and others in understanding and utilizing Scoir, a college admission data management system.
  • Pursue regional and national professional development conferences including attendance at annual conference(s).
  • Write detailed letters of support for each counselee.
  • Participate in events throughout the year sponsored by the School Counseling Office, such as teaching College Advising seminars, evening presentations, and college fairs.
    Qualifications:
  • Applicable School Counseling License.
  • Candidates will have a minimum of a bachelor's degree with MA/MS preferred and college counseling experience in a secondary school environment and/or college admission experience preferred at a selective institution.
  • Ability to work effectively with Diocesan employees, department heads, representatives of other agencies and the general public.
  • Excellent written, verbal and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem-solving capacity.
  • Strong ethical values.

Physical and Work Requirements:

  • Occasional light lifting and carrying of under 15 pounds
  • Occasional moderate carrying and lifting of 15 – 44 pounds
  • Frequent use both hands and fingers (i.e. typing)
  • Frequent extended periods of sitting
  • Occasional periods of standing, kneeling and climbing
  • Occasional ability of minimal hearing (i.e. loud noises, sirens) and routine hearing (i.e. listening to others in conversation)
  • Occasional time spent working closely with others
