The School of Christian Formation for the Diocese of Palm Beach, Florida offers a series of classes and programs for adult Catholics who wish to learn more about the rich traditions of their faith. Classes provide introductions to the major topics and historical periods of the Catholic faith.

The goals of the School of Christian Formation are four-fold:

• To nourish and challenge Catholics with a deeper personal understanding of their faith tradition.

• To enable participants to bring this experience to their families, friends, places of work and ministry

• To explore the Catholic tradition from our local context as a diverse Church with members of different cultural backgrounds and with varying ministerial needs.

• To situate our experience of faith, Church and ministry in light of the teachings and documents of the Second Vatican Council.

The School of Christian Formation seeks to make its programming accessible to all persons in the diocese who are interested in learning more about their faith tradition. In matters regarding scheduling of times and locations, as well as the payment of fees, one of our primary goals is to meet the needs and limitations of participants in the program.

While the fee for each class is $10.00, plus the price of the textbook, persons who wish to participate in the program and are active in parish ministry may wish to seek financial support from their parish, or call our office to discuss the situation. No one will be turned down for lack of funds.

The Course of Study

Each class in the School of Christian Formation will meet for a total of twelve hours. Classes will be scheduled at various times (days, weeknights and weekends) and locations throughout the entire diocese depending on demand. Instructors in the program will have a bachelors, masters or doctoral degree in Theology, or extensive expertise in the course offered.

Persons may audit or take in individual courses for credit as desired, or follow the entire three year program which concludes with the granting of a certificate of completion. The program follows the new catechism of the Catholic Church in three divisions- Our Faith, Celebrating Our Faith, and Living Our Faith.

Class and Program Requirements

In addition to class attendance and participation each class will have an assigned textbook Readings will be decided by the instructors. Catechist Certification through the office of catechesis and Leadership Development is available. In general, participants who miss more than two classes will not be granted credit. However, special circumstances may be taken into consideration by the instructors. The instructors of each course will determine which students have earned credit for the course.

In mid August a day-long retreat will be offered for those wishing to participate in the School of Christian Formation. This gathering is required at least once for students seeking the certificate, but all participants in the SCF are invited. Similarly, a retreat experience will be offered in May upon completion of the school year. Graduations will be held in conjunction with La Escuela de Formación Cristiana, our sister program in the diocese that offers similar courses in Spanish.

La Escuela de Formación Cristiana de la Diócesis de Palm Beach, Florida ofrece una serie de clases y programas para los Católicos adultos que desean conocer más sobre las ricas tradiciones de su fe. Las clases proveen introducciones sobre los temas principales de la fe Católica.

La Escuela de Formación Cristiana tiene 4 finalidades principales

• Alimentar y retar a los Católicos a lograr un conocimiento más profundo de su fe.

• Ayudar a los participantes a llevar esta experiencia de fe a sus familias, amistades, lugares de estudio y de trabajo y lugar de ministerio eclesial

• A explorar la tradición Católica desde nuestro contexto local de una Iglesia diversa con variedad de culturas y necesidades ministeriales

• A situar nuestra experiencia de fe, Iglesia y ministerio a la luz de las enseñanzas y documentos del Vaticano II.

La Escuela de Formación Cristiana quiere hacer su programación asequible a todas las personas de la Diócesis que estén interesadas en aprender más sobre las tradiciones de nuestra fe. En cuanto a los horarios, lugares de clase y costo de las clases, nuestro principal fin es el de responder a las necesidades de los participantes.

Se pide una donación de $10.00 por cada curso, además del costo del texto, las personas que desean participar en el programa y están activos en el ministerio pero sienten que no pueden costear las clases, pueden tratar de ver si su parroquia les puede ayudar; o pueden llamar a la Oficina de Pastoral Hispana para discutir el asunto. A nadie se le negará la participación por falta de fondos.

Programa de Clases

Cada curso de la Escuela de Formación Cristiana cuenta de 12 horas de clase. Los cursos se dictan en diferentes lugares y horarios a lo largo de la Diócesis, las personas que desean tomar más de dos cursos a la vez en diferentes localidades pueden hacerlo. Los profesores son personas preparadas con BA, Maestría o Doctorado en Teología o con extensa experiencia en la materia.

El programa sigue la división del Nuevo Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica- Nuestra Fe; Celebrando Nuestra Fe y Viviendo Nuestra Fe

Requisitos de los cursos y del programa

Además de la participación en cada una de las 6 clases que duran cada curso, cada curso tendrá un libro de texto. Cada profesor decidirá que material se utilizará en la clase. Se ofrece la certificación de Catequistas a nivel diocesano por medio de la Oficina de Catequesis y Liderazgo. Por los general, los estudiantes que pierdan más de dos clases por curso no recibirán certificación para ese curso. Sin embargo, los profesores pueden tener en cuenta circunstancias especiales, el profesor será quien determine que estudiantes tendrán el certificado o no.

A mediados de agosto se ofrecerá un Retiro de Orientación para los que están participando en la Escuela o desean comenzar a participar. De la misma manera un retiro de Graduación se ofrecerá en mayo para la clase que se gradúa. La graduación tomará lugar en mayo junto con el programa hermano Schools of Christian Formation. Normalmente la graduación tomará lugar en una Misa bilingüe presidida por el Señor Obispo y los candidatos recibirán el diploma de "Agentes de Evangelización"

La clase que se gradúa es invitada a formar parte de un segundo programa "Talleres de Profundización Teologica".
